Find Best Local Movers and Start Saving Up to 50% On Your Moving Cost.
When you are in the early stages of organizing a move, it is a stressful time even for a short local move! The differences between a local move and a long distance move is monumental. How does one go about making any kind of move smooth and easy? There are multiple factors used to define the prices for local moves. What follows is an explanation of the factors, and everything you need to know to have a smooth local relocation.
First, a local move is classified as a change of address no more than 100 miles away from your current address. A local move is defined as a change of location that falls within 100 miles in distance. The shorter distance move is beneficial in many ways such as less travel time for you and your loved ones, overall moving costs is lower, there is no need for hotel stays for you or the move staff, less meals, etc. Let’s examine what preparation is needed to have a smooth and successful local move.
Prep for Local Moving – Supplies and Packing
Many people choose to move themselves but to do so, you need the right supplies. Specifically, the right packing materials. The proper packing materials include packing paper, bubble wrap for fragile items, packing tape, moving blankets (you can also use your own blankets), boxes, markers and labels. There are special boxes for specific items such as dishes, wardrobe and more. They are designed to make your move smoother and easier while protecting your belongings. Moving locally usually takes less time and travel than long-distance moves. However, regardless of distance, moves can be difficult as things break if not properly packed. Packing fragile or breakable items requires bubble wrap and packing paper. Remember, whether it’s fragile glassware or electronics – wrap them carefully. It is smart to place your appliances (TV, computer, kitchen appliances, etc.) in their original box. If you have already disposed of those boxes, try to find another box that is similar in size as the appliance. There are special items that require tender loving care while being moved such as a piano, grandfather clock, fish tank, so it would be better to have a professional specifically trained mover prepare them for the move.
Local Moving Cost Estimates
Prior to your short distance move, take a few minutes to plan where you are going to place your furniture in your new home. This will enable you to discard items you won’t need at your new location and can discard before moving it.
The rates for your local move vary based on the size of your home (i.e. number of rooms), type of belongings you are going to have transported, and finally the total distance involved in the relocation.
A cost per hour method, one could plan on paying approximately $30 per mover and a truck, for two movers and a truck the price could go up to as high as $120 an hour, for three movers and a truck the cost on average is $135, and for four movers and a truck the price is an average of $160 to $170. If you choose to add packing into the services, you can figure on the standard rate of $0.60 per pound.
Moving a studio apartment with two movers should take no more than 3-4 hours total and cost roughly around $300-$500 total. However, moving a large home with four or more bedrooms and more than five movers, it would take about a day and a half of work bringing the total cost of around $2,000 – $2,500. If the movers do a good job for you, the expected tip rate for movers is about 10% of the total moving cost. For moves scheduled during weekends or peak periods of time (i.e. summer), the price increases.

Licenses and Insurance
Make sure the moving company you are talking with is properly licensed and insured. If their license number is not on their website, ask for it so you can verify it. There’s nothing worse than having all of your belongings involved in an accident or stolen and no legitimate company to fall back on.
You can look up the moving company’s license on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website.. Reputable moving companies post their FMCSA license number where the public can see it and can easily provide proof of their insurance with zero hesitance when asked.
